CHAPTER EIGHT

Chase eased the cottage door open, not wanting to wake Shay if she were still sleeping. Stepping quietly inside, he made his way over to her bedroom door and listened for some sign that she was awake.

Not a sound. But his concern that she had forgotten to lock the patio doors had him reaching for the knob.

“Boo!”

“Shit!” Chase nearly jumped out of his loafers.

He spun around to find Shay standing there, grinning like some mischievous child. “Dammit, Shay, that’s not funny.”

Her wide green eyes twinkled as she looked up at him. “So, is being a peeping Tom one of the requirements for becoming a detective?”

He scowled. “I wasn’t peeping.”

Shay leaned against the wall and crossed her arms as she looked up at him. “Sure seemed that way to me.”

“I was just going to make sure you were all right,” he muttered in irritation. She made him feel like a kid who just got caught with his hand in the cookie jar?

Her mouth twitched in amusement. “What, afraid the bed bugs had gotten me?”

“This is serious, Shay.” He glanced down at the too short nightshirt and the long, sexy legs below it. Damn. Then forced his gaze back to her face. “Someone’s made a threat against your life. Or have you forgotten that?”

The playful smile faded. “How could I? The fact that I have a bodyguard assigned to me is a constant reminder.” She turned and walked away, disappearing into the kitchen.

Chase followed. “Something smells good.”

He leaned over the breakfast bar, flashing his best smile. They were having lunch with her father and he was determined to do it without a repeat of the night before.

“It’s a mushroom and Swiss cheese omelet,” Shay said as she puttered around the kitchen, avoiding his gaze.

“You cook. I’m impressed.”

“Yes. Someone has to make sure my child is fed.” She moved to the stove. “So, where were you off to so early this morning? Out doing whatever it is P.I.’s do I suppose.”

She pulled a long knife from the drawer, then grabbed an orange from the fruit bowl on the breakfast bar and placed it onto a small cutting board next to the stove. Holding it with one hand, she began slicing it. One sweep of the blade per slice. The knife was pretty damned sharp.

Definitely not a good time to get on Shay’s bad side.

“Actually, I went to meet your father for our morning swim.”

“Is that so? It must be awfully windy out.” Shay opened the cupboard door and reached for a plate.

“No,” he replied and then swallowed hard as he caught sight of the silken panties peeking out from under the raised hem of her nightshirt. He ached to run his hands over that silk and the rounded flesh beneath it.

“So,” There was more than a hint of irritation in her voice as Shay turned to face him, “you took a hair dryer with you?”

“What are you talking about?” Chase ran a hand through his hair.
